Dear Students and Parents,
I consider it a great privilege to be entrusted with your (your child's) Spanish
education and I want each student to enjoy a class that is rigorous yet relaxed, where we all share the experience of language together. My goal is for each child to reach his or her potential. Grades are not as important (to me) as a child trying his/her absolute hardest and showing me what he/she is capable of. For me the grade is not what makes the student – it’s the effort, dedication and respect given to the curriculum, the class and the teacher.
I give extensive class notes and handouts and take a great deal of effort to explain myself and answer questions in class. It is important that students focus during lessons and ask for clarification at the time they may begin to get lost. The study of a foreign language needs a strong foundation and I will do everything possible to ensure that my students receive that foundation.
Students need to be responsible as well. They need to study nightly and complete all homework assignments to the best of their ability. Homework counts as one quiz (approximately 10% of the quarter grade). Each quarter every student begins with 100% homework average. This is a very easy way to maintain or pull up an average, but likewise, if a student misses too many assignments, it could hurt the quarter grade. Five points are deducted for each missing or incomplete assignment. These cannot be made up.
Throughout the year I will be giving helpful hints on test taking skills and ways to study (STUDY SKILLS!). Any note I write in class or any exercise we've done may show up again on a test and quiz. Students should take advantage of the fact that I always display the answers to all the assignments on the board and should make corrections, filling in missing answers and reviewing the homework in class with me. This will be a great help to achieving success!
Full period tests will only be given on "Foreign Language testing day". Any other type of assessment may be given on any other day but will be announced in advance. Extra help will be given upon request daily after school as well as on our specific extra help day. Kids, please take advantage of this extra time with me to clarify any questions and to work through difficult topics.
I look forward to a rewarding year. Karen Bardash
